North Zulch honors athletes


North Zulch High School held their annual athletic banquet on May 24 and recognized Michael Harris and Emma Baker as the school’s athletes of the year.

Each sport presented a number of awards in specific categories such as new comer of the year, defensive and offensive MVP, overall MVP and the fighting Bulldog award, which is presented to the athlete who shows the most heart.

For volleyball, Cheyenne Wallin was named new comer of the year and the defensive MVP was Raegan VanCour. Emma Baker earned offensive MVP with Alley Grier receiving the fighting Bulldog award. Sally Osth was dubbed the team’s MVP.

Tyler Holder earned new comer of the year for the baseball team with Michael Harris as the defensive MVP. Offensive MVP was awarded to Cole Weaver and Nolan Diserens earned the fighting Bulldog award. James O’Neal was named MVP.

For softball, the new comer of the year award was split between Cheyenne Wallin and Katelyn Crocker. The defensive MVP was Eliza Lazenby and Emma Baker earned offensive MVP. The fighting Bulldog award was presented to Cassidy Brown and Raegan VanCour was named the team’s MVP.

James O’Neal was awarded new comer of the year for the men’s basketball team with Tyler Sanchez as defensive MVP. The offensive MVP award was split between Cole Weaver and Michael Harris while Erivey Medina earned the fighting Bulldog award. The team’s MVP was Gerhart Wiese.

On the women’s side, Katelyn Crocker earned new comer of the year. The team’s defensive MVP was Eliza Lazenby and Cassidy Brown was the offensive MVP. The fighting Bulldog award was presented to Madison Murphy and Emma Baker was named overall MVP.

The cross country runners of the year were Tessah Haggard for the women’s side and Holden Green for the men’s. The track athletes of the year were Emma Baker and James O’Neal.

Certificates were awarded to all students who participated in athletics during the school year and those who won district awards or qualified for postseason success were also mentioned.

For volleyball, those individuals were Sally Osth, district offensive MVP, district first team members Emma Baker and Reagan VanCour and district second team members Cassidy Brown and Ana Osth. The North Zulch volleyball team qualified for the state tournament last fall.

The baseball players recognized for the Bulldogs were the unanimous district first team pitcher James O’Neal, district first team outfielder Michael Harris and district second team members Cole Weaver and Blake Housley.

Gerhart Wiese, who surpassed the 3,000-point mark in his basketball career at North Zulch this season, was recognized for winning district offensive MVP. Michael Harris and Cole Weaver were named to the district’s first team while James O’Neal, Erivey Medina and Zachary Kilpatrick were honorable mentions. Emma Baker was recognized for making the district’s first team on the women’s side while Raegan VanCour and Sally Osth earned second team honors.

In cross country, Holden Green was recognized for his district championship and regional qualification. Other regional qualifiers for the Bulldogs were Tessah Haggard, James Pryor, Landon Theiss and Peyton Wolfe.

James O’Neal was recognized for becoming a regional finalist in track along with regional qualifier Emma Baker. Area qualifiers included Katelyn Crocker, Stephen Harris, Katie Douga, Erivey Medina, Sam Moore, Holden Green, Raegan VanCour and Peyton Wolfe.
