The North Zulch Bulldogs basketball team split a pair of non-district matchups over the week with a 49-40 victory over Leon on Dec. 17 at NZHS and a 55-50 road loss to Cross Roads Friday.

The Bulldogs got off to a quick 21-8 advantage over Leon after the opening quarter and never relinquished the lead.

“We were able to get off to a really fast start,” said head coach Matt Kirschner. “The offense flowed and we shot the ball really well. We were 10-of-13 from two-point range to start the game. When you shoot like that, it builds confidence in the kids.”

The remainder of the game was slow-paced and the Bulldogs never let Leon back in the fight. Kaleb Douga led the team in scoring with 13 points in the win and was followed by Emory Broussard with 10. Stephen Harris added another seven in the effort.

In their last matchup before the holiday break, North Zulch dropped a tight contest at Cross Roads after an explosive final quarter for both teams.

“There were a lot of variables going into the game, but I thought the kids played pretty well,” Kirschner said. “Neither team shot well from the floor. In the fourth quarter, everything started falling for both sides.”

The Bulldogs were outscored 21-20 in the closing eight minutes after a low-scoring three quarters to start the day.

“We lost from the free throw line,” Kirschner said. “We were fouling a little bit too much. Twice in the fourth quarter we cut it to two points and we could just never get a stop when we needed it.”

North Zulch missed five free throws in the loss, including three in the final eight minutes of play. Harris led the way in scoring for the Bulldogs with 19 points, which included four three-point shots. Harris connected on three shots from the beyond the arc in the fourth quarter and scored 12 of his points.

Tyler Kirschner and Haseeb Sattar each added nine points in the loss at Cross Roads.

Per UIL rules, each team is required five off days during the holiday break and can resume action on Dec. 26. The Bulldogs will compete in a tournament at Richards ISD Dec. 27-28.

North Zulch will go up against Hempstead JV, Lasara, Richards and Leon during the post-Christmas tournament. Their district slate will begin on Jan. 17 against Normangee at NZHS.
