NZ cross country opens season

Posted

The North Zulch cross country team has competed in two meets to start their first season under new head coach Michael Stenseth.

Stenseth took over the team this year after the program’s top athletes graduated. They had five varsity runners compete in the first two meets at Lexington and Navasota.

“They are running hard and putting in a good effort,” said Stenseth. “You come to a point where you need to get out of your comfort zone and make it hurt a little bit. Basically, you are pushing the pain farther away down the course. But you need to push yourself in order to make progress and knock your time down. That is where we are at now.”

Both of the first two meets took place in hot weather. The team’s second contest in Navasota took place in the afternoon, making it especially hot.

“We need to learn how to run in all kinds of conditions,” said Stenseth. “The district meet will be an afternoon race, as well.”

Michael Snook has led the way as the team’s top runner at Lexington and Navasota. He finished 11th when matched up with the top runners at Lexington.

Grace Green of the Bulldogs has ran in a competition for the first time since junior high to start the season in 2019.

“We are still trying to teach her how to run the race,” said Stenseth. “How to fly down the downhill slopes, how to chop your feet to go uphill and how to get off to a good start.”

The group is still inexperienced as a whole and constantly in the process of bettering themselves. They practice early in the morning before school starts. Stenseth will implement new running activities this week to help ease the transition as they continue to move forward.

Their next meet will take place at Anderson-Shiro on Sept. 25, two weeks after their last meet Navasota.

They are also scheduled to travel to Latexo on Oct. 2 and Caldwell on Oct. 17. They may acquire another meet to compete in before the season is over.
