NZ FCCLA fights childhood cancer

North Zulch Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) surpassed their mark of raising $5,000 for pediatric cancer research by over two thousand with their Superhero 5K Run on Saturday at the Shepherd Creek Subdivision.

North Zulch student Kashaf Shahid, FCCLA Region IV STAR winner in the Advocacy category, worked with the club’s advisor and teacher Jane Dill to bring together a small community with big hearts. Over 75 participants and volunteers came out to support the first annual FCCLA 5K Run.

“Hosting a 5K run is a lot of work but after analyzing the results and seeing all of the support for childhood cancer, it is clear that all of that hard work has paid off,” said Shahid. “I will continue to advocate for this unfair funding of childhood cancer, which is only four percent. I hope more people will help and show support to “The Cure Starts Now” with a donation.”

The event was held in honor of Jade Bridier, Cade Beasley and Gaby Tobias. Jade passed away just five days after being diagnosed. Gaby has been making progress while Cade is now cancer free.

“It was a wonderful and emotional day,” said Dill. “These superheroes have touched so many people with their fight against cancer. A check will be presented to “The Cure Starts Now” Central Texas at Jade’s 3rd Annual Superhero Ball on May 18.”

Despite the success of the event, Shahid is not done advocating just yet. She will attend the State FCCLA STAR events in Dallas this weekend to share why she chose to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer and “The Cure Starts Now.” She is also hoping to present it at Nationals for FCCLA to spread her message even further.
