NZ FCCLA fights childhood cancer

The North Zulch High School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) announced plans to host their second 5k Run Saturday to benefit ‘The Cure Starts Now’, an organization devoted to fighting cancer.

Last year, North Zulch FCCLA raised over $7,000 through the 5k. The group announced plans to hold the event again, with an u[dated goal of raising $7,500, through a press release signed by Advisor Jane Dill and group members Jordan Housley and Summer Benham.

The group is raising money to fight childhood cancer, specifically, which is an issue close to their hearts in the school.

“Our school and community also have been affected by childhood cancer by having two students being directly impacted by the disease in Gabriela Tobias and Cade Beasley,” said the press release. “We hope this 5k can honor them and help end childhood cancer.”

They are also honoring Jade Bridier, who passed away in 2016 just five days after she was diagnosed. FCCLA members will attend Jade’s 4th Annual Ball, a dance held in her honor, following the event.

“Last year’s ball was a huge success with our students,” said the press release. “(Jade’s) story and fight with the deadliest form of pediatric brain cancer continues to impact lives.”

Sponsorship packages are available for businesses or individuals to purchase. Every dollar raised will be used to provide funding for research and programs to give impacted children hope for survival and a cure for cancer.

‘The Cure Starts Now’ focuses on revolutionary strategies for cancer research. To learn more about the organization, visit www.thecurestartsnow.org.

The run will take place Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Shepard Creek Subdivision, located on Highway 21 in North Zulch.

North Zulch FCCLA will also hold a crawfish boil Sunday at the tracks to benefit Tobias. The event lasts from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes a silent auction. A ticket costs $10 and will be good for a pound of crawfish.
