NZ FCCLA wins big in Atlanta

North Zulch ISD students traveled to the FCCLA Leadership Conference at the end of June in Atlanta to represent Texas and won gold medals for their National Programs in Action presentations.

“We were very fortunate that some parents wanted to help fundraise, chaperone, drive and support these students,” said North Zulch FCCLA Advisor Jane Dill. “I am excited to see what next year has in store for North Zulch FCCLA.”

The Junior team with Katelyn Crocker, Madison Murphy and Landon Theiss earned their gold medal in Atlanta for their Traffic Safety Presentation. This year, the team participated in FACTS (Families Acting for Traffic Safety) and had numerous activities each month over bus safety, texting and driving dangers, driving under the influence and seat belts. They also received awards from TxDot and were state winners in the National FACTS program.

Shelby Ward participated in the Occupational Division and received gold for her presentation on human trafficking. This year, she researched the topic extensively and received information from Laramie Gorbert, a human trafficking specialist from Texas Association Against Sexual Assault in Austin. She persuaded Gorbert to come to NZISD to inform junior and senior students on the issue, how to be aware of your location and how traffickers recruit or kidnap.

Also in attendance was NZISD student and FCCLA Region IV President MacKenzie Green. She attended meetings and learned leadership skills that will be helpful in fulfilling her duties next year. Green also attended an FCCLA Leadership Conference at Camp Allen in June with Dill.

Dill and the students spent their downtime exploring the local sites. They saw the Coca Cola Museum, Georgia State Aquarium, Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta and the gravesite of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The students held numerous fundraisers to gather most of the money they would require to make this trip possible. If you would like to schedule a presentation from these students for your group or organization, please contact Jane Dill at
