NZ set to return to the court

The North Zulch Lady Bulldogs volleyball team is set to begin their district schedule at Centerville on Friday after a 17-day break since their last game against Allen Academy on Sept. 10.

The team was scheduled to travel to Livingston on Friday, but the game was canceled due to flooding.

“I am not sure how I feel about the gap in the schedule now that we lost the Livingston match,” said head coach Melissa Padgett, who is in her first year at the helm in North Zulch. “The girls are eager to get back on the court for district, but I worry the break may make us inconsistent come game time.”

Padgett did not have the opportunity to build the team’s 2019 non-district schedule and stated early in the year that she would have liked a higher level of competition before entering district play. North Zulch posted a record of 27-9 in preseason play.

While the long break may have a down side, Padgett believes it could play to the team’s benefit as well.

“Everyone is healthy and well rested,” said Padgett. “We have attacked a lot of fine tuning and skill work with the extra practices. They are ready for Centerville on Friday and know they are about to battle for a tough district title.”

The Lady Bulldogs will play their first three district matchups on the road in Centerville, Iola and Leon. They will then return to NZHS for five straight games before concluding the regular season with a pair on the road.

Their first district home game comes on Oct. 8 against Normangee.
