NZISD hosts basketball tournament

Both North Zulch basketball teams welcomed a number of programs to NZISD over the weekend to compete in the school’s second annual pre-district tournament from Thursday until Saturday.

“When you go to tournaments, you want to get better,” said NZISD Athletic Director and men’s basketball coach Matt Kirschner. “I felt it was more competitive from top to bottom (this year) and there were very few blowouts. I wanted teams to feel like they would be tested, but also have a chance to win games”

Each team competing in the tournament was guaranteed at least five matchups. The competing teams on the men’s side included North Zulch, Richards, Centerville, New Waverly (junior varsity), Milano, Latexo, Navasota (junior varsity) and Fayettville.

On the women’s side, competing programs included North Zulch, Brazos Christian, New Waverly, Shepherd, Richards, Fayetteville and Caldwell.

“I saw a lot of teams improve each day,” said Kirschner. “We have played in tournaments in the past where we played five games and did not get any better. This year, we made adjustments and changed a few teams around. That kept things competitive. Teams know that when they come here they will be treated right and everything will be competitive.”

Centerville prevailed on the men’s side and finished first in the tournament. They were followed by Navasota (junior varsity), Richards, Milano and North Zulch.

On the women’s side, Fayetteville prevailed and was followed by Shepherd and North Zulch.
