NZISD manages abrupt changes

Posted

The North Zulch Independent School District (NZISD) held their annual board meeting for March Thursday before all school activities hit pause as a result of the Coronavirus.

“It is constant right now and we are just trying to keep up with all the updates,” said Superintendent Alan Andrus on the situation that, as of Tuesday, curtailed all school activities through March 29.

One of those changes was the annual STAAR Test requirement, which Gov. Greg Abbott officially waived Monday.

“I think it kind of relieves stress on the students and the schools,” said Andrus. “We will still hold them accountable and have our local testing to make sure our students are growing. But we have a lot more important things to focus on right now like the health of our students and communities.”

During Thursday’s meeting, the NZISD Board passed their school calendar for the 2020-21 school year, which is similar to this year’s.

“Our calendar pretty much runs the same next year,” said Andrus. “The teachers really liked it and I think the students and parents did, as well, so we kept it roughly the same.”

The Board will participate in their required annual “Team of Eight” training following the conclusion of next month’s board meeting April 9.
