Pathway of Light set

Several area churches are once again preparing for the annual Pathway of Light, which will take place Dec. 6-9 on the grounds behind First Baptist Church in Madisonville.

The Pathway of Light is the recreation of the life of Christ from birth to resurrection through interactive scenes portrayed by members of the community. The script is based solely upon the Gospels beginning with the Gospel of Luke to provide a basis for the sets, casts, dialogue and narratives.

“The purpose is to tell people the story of Jesus Christ,” said Warren Hunt, associate pastor of worship and education at the First Baptist Church. “It is exciting to see folks come together regardless of denomination.”

This will be the twelfth year for the event, but it is still attracting new guests. Two years ago, officials found that 41 percent of guests who came through had not been there before despite reaching the decade mark. Last year, 30 to 40 percent of the visitors were first timers in the Pathway of Light.

The cast will consist of nearly 300 community members from a number of different churches in the area. Participants are committing a week or more of their time with the rehearsals leading up to the event.

Guests can now make their reservations for the event to accommodate one or more. Officials encourage guests to make their reservations as soon as possible.

“We opened up reservations on November 1st, and almost all of Thursday was full by the end of the night,” said Hunt. “That is our biggest urge right now. We will take walk-ins and try to fit people into groups, but it fills up fast.”

A number of volunteers are involved from area churches, but they are always looking for more to step forward. If interested, call the First Baptist Church office.

Each group will consist of up to 25 people and leaves every 10 minutes starting at 6 p.m. each night.

Guests are encouraged to arrive at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center 30 minutes prior to their scheduled time. If you do not check in 15 minutes before, your spot may be made available to walk-in guests and those on the stand-by list.

Refreshments will be available in the Family Life Center while guests wait. Admission to the Pathway of Light is free but guests are welcome to donate.
