Sheppard earns THSBCA honor

Posted

Madisonville High School baseball player Colby Sheppard was named to the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association (THSBCA) 4-A Academic All-State Team, the organization announced Thursday.

“It is pretty cool to know, even though the season was canceled, I competed well in a different area than baseball,” said Sheppard. “I had a really successful junior year and won some awards for it, so this award means a lot because it was my senior year.”

Sheppard graduated from MHS in May as part of the class that saw their final semester interrupted inside the classroom and out. His senior season on the baseball field was cut short before the start of district play due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There is life after baseball,” said Sheppard. “Even if you are fortunate enough to play in college, you have to keep your grades up. In high school, it is a ‘no pass, no play’ policy, so you have to stay on top of your grades.”

The THSBCA released a lengthy list of individuals qualifying for the honor from across the state at each level via email Thursday. Sheppard was the lone Mustang to qualify for the award.

“(Sheppard) has an excellent work ethic, he was always willing to get anything done for the team,” said MHS baseball coach Adam Borgfeld. “He was a vocal leader as well as a leader by action. We are really going to miss him in our program.”

Sheppard plans to attend Sam Houston State University in the fall, where he will study construction management.

The THSBCA works to promote membership and to further its members’ knowledge and awareness of baseball at all levels. Their staff typically handles concerns with current issues facing the game, rule changes, coach-umpire relations, recognition of players and coaches through multiple award programs, such as the Academic All-State Team, and more.
