Soccer dismantles district opponents

The Madisonville men's soccer team scored a total of 20 goals over the week and picked up two more district wins to improve to 4-0 in district play.

The Mustangs continue their phenomenal season and improve to 14-1-2 overall. In their four wins to open district, they outscored opponents Crockett, Cleveland, Hempstead and Hearne 27-1. They went for their fifth straight in district last night with a home game against Navasota.

"The boys have always been so confident and they continue to amaze me," said Madisonville soccer coach Baltazar Reyes. "But as a coach, I can't have them underestimating any team. We have dominated, but we have made mistakes that could come back and hurt us if we don't address them."

The two home wins over Hempstead last Tuesday and Hearne on Friday were symbolic of how the season has gone for the Madisonville soccer team. The team's sole loss came on Jan. 30 against Palestine and they have been untouchable since. It may be hard to pinpoint any aspect of the game they need to improve on, but Reyes is determined to keep improving on a daily basis.

"We can play long ball very well," said Reyes. "But it's best to touch the ball more and not look clumsy. Long ball can work well for us, but it won't always work against certain defenses."

Luis Aceves recorded four goals last Tuesday against Hempsted while David Parras and Jared Solis each knocked home a pair. Bayron Veliz and Jose Ibarra each scored as well. Parras also recorded three assists while Ibarra, Mauricio Aceves, Josue Hernandez, Luis Aceves and Veliz.

The narrative was the same on Friday when Hearne came to town. Diego Guevera scored three times along with Parras. Mauricio Aceves added two of his own while Daniel Hernandez and Veliz scored once. Parras also had three assists along with Veliz. Mauricio Aceves and Guevera recorded assists as well while Solis added two of his own. The Mustangs won back-to-back contests by a score of 10-0.

After Tuesday's home bout with Navasota, the Mustangs will travel to Crockett to face the Bulldogs on Friday. They will then have four more games remaining before the start of the postseason.
