Soccer prepares for district play

The Madisonville men’s soccer team concluded their non-district slate with a 3-2 loss to Splendora at MHS Friday. The team began district play Tuesday with a road matchup in New Waverly.

“We played well (against Splendora) and moved the ball very well when we had possession,” said head coach Baltazar Reyes. “Defensively, we needed to be more attentive and not distracted.”

Madisonville goals in Friday’s loss were scored by Emmanuel Guevara and Cesar Martinez. Vladimir Morales assisted both scoring efforts.

“We made a lot of mistakes in non-district play that we cannot make once district begins,” said Reyes.

The Mustangs began district play Tuesday in New Waverly and will return to MHS Friday to host Westwood at 7:15 p.m.

“We just need to be more effective on the offensive side and have good possessions with the ball,” said Reyes on what the team needs to work on moving forward. “Defensively, we need to be mistake-free. We just need to take each game one at a time.”

Madisonville will also battle Mexia, Crockett and Palestine in district play. They will spend four of their first five district matchups on the road during the first stint and host four of their last five matchups to conclude the regular season.
