The Madisonville men’s soccer team split a pair of non-district matchups over the week with a 3-1 loss to Royal Jan. 21 at MHS and a 2-0 victory in Rockdale Friday. The Mustangs traveled to Hudson Thursday and have two matches remaining before beginning district play Feb. 11.

“Each game we are playing is preparing us for district play,” said head coach Baltazar Reyes. “They are gaining confidence after each game and we are making fewer mistakes. We have been playing well, we just need to keep playing good soccer and limiting mistakes.”

The Mustangs dropped a home contest to Royal Jan. 21 despite a goal from Jovany Silva, which was assisted by Vladimir Morales.

“We really played well against Royal,” said Reyes. “We moved the ball very well and created a few chances to score, but did not put them away. They capitalized on our defensive mistakes.”

The junior varsity team picked up a 2-0 win over Royal with goals scored by Chase Couch and Franklin Coronado. Pablo Sanchez picked up an assist.

The Mustangs bounced back Friday with a 2-0 road victory in Rockdale. Morales picked up a goal in the win as well as an assist on a Ryan Kinsey goal.

“We played well and moved the ball around the field against Rockdale,” said Reyes.

The Mustangs will host Livingston Friday before concluding their non-district slate against Splendora Feb. 7.

Their first district game will take place in New Waverly Feb. 11.
