The Madisonville soccer team split a pair of non-district, road matchups over the week with a 4-1 loss in Cleveland Jan. 14 and a 2-0 victory in Hempstead Friday. The Mustangs will compete in a number of standalone matchups to prepare for their district schedule after two tournaments to start the year.

“We played really well against (Cleveland and Hempstead),” said head coach Baltazar Reyes on the week’s performances. “We moved the ball well up the field, but could not finish the chances we created. On defense, we were a bit nervous which did not help because (Cleveland) did not miss.”

Vladimir Morales scored Madisonville’s lone goal in the loss at Cleveland. In the victory over Hempstead, Armando Polanco and Emmanuel Guevara each found the back of the net for the Mustangs. Guevara also added an assist along with Morales in the win.

The team will begin district play in New Waverly on Feb. 11. In preparation for the regular season, they hosted a tournament at MHS to begin the new year and competed in another in Brenham Jan. 9-11.

“The tournaments helped us out a lot because we made many mistakes and the boys now have an idea of how to fix them,” said Reyes. “We have had better chemistry throughout every game we have played and are still touching the ball very well.”

The Mustangs took on Royal Tuesday at MHS and will travel to Rockdale Friday for a 7 p.m. matchup. Their final non-league matchups before district play include Hudson, Livingston and Splendora.

Their first home district contest will be Feb. 14 against Westwood at MHS at 7 p.m.
