The Madisonville men’s soccer team began district play with a pair of sizable victories over New Waverly Feb. 11 and Westwood Friday. The Mustangs outscored both opponents 12-1 during the home matchups.

“The team has played very well in our first two district games,” said head coach Baltazar Reyes. “We have had good possessions with the ball. We just need to concentrate more on the defensive side. There were times where we got overconfident and were caught watching instead of defending.”

The Feb. 11 district opener against New Waverly was originally scheduled to take place on the road but was ultimately moved to MHS due to weather. The Mustangs were led by two-goal performances from Jovany Silva and Emmanuel Guevara in a 6-1 rout of the Bulldogs.

Vladimir Morales, who recorded a pair of assists, also found the back of the net along with Ryan Kinsey. Guevara and Gabriel Aceves also added assists in the win.

The Mustangs stayed hot Friday with a 6-0 shutout of Westwood at MHS. Chase Couch and Cesar Martinez each posted a pair of goals while Morales and Juan Bedolla added one apiece. Guevara assisted two goals while Luis Lopez and Pablo Sanchez each assisted one.

“Both victories have been a confidence booster,” said Reyes. "We just need to keep the momentum going.”

The Mustangs had a chance to make it three straight to begin district play Tuesday with a road matchup in Mexia. It was their first of three straight road games to conclude the first stint of district.

They will conclude the regular season with three straight home games at MHS.
