The Madisonville soccer team entered Tuesday’s home matchup against Crockett on a three-game winning streak in district play, leaving them in a three-way tie for second place at 5-3.

The three victories were the team's response to an 11-0 defeat at the hands of Palestine Feb. 25. They picked up wins over New Waverly (6-2), Westwood (5-0) and Mexia (2-1) to open the second round of league play.

“We have been playing really well,” said head coach Baltazar Reyes. “We have moved the ball really well and are putting the chances we have on offense away. We just need to keep having possession of the ball and, when we create chances, we need to capitalize. On defense, we need to stay solid and not make any mistakes”

Friday’s 2-1 win over Mexia was a revenge win after the Black Cats defeated the Mustangs by the same score Feb. 18.

They defeated Westwood for the second time this season by a score of 6-0 March 3. Chase Couch scored three goals for Madisonville while Juan Bedolla, Gabriel Aceves and Vladimir Morales each added one apiece. Assists were recorded by Ryan Kinsey, Jovany Silva, Juan Torres, Aceves and Morales.

The team’s final two district matchups of the season, including Tuesday’s matchup against Crockett, come against teams who have already defeated them.

“We played really well (against Crockett Feb. 21) but could not finish on the offensive side and one costly mistake on defense got us,” said Reyes. “(Against Palestine) we just cannot make mistakes.”

The Mustangs will honor their seniors in their season finale against Palestine at MHS.
