Susan Mae Payton was born on March 6, 1946, in New Orleans, and died on March 10, 2018, at her home in Madisonville. She lived a joyful life surrounded by her dear friends and family.
Susan grew up in New Orleans, and then moved to Pasadena, where she graduated from South Houston High School. She eventually moved to Leona and finally, Madisonville. Susan loved arranging flowers, working in her resale shop, decorating for the holidays, going to Mardi Gras parades, collecting elephants, and attending family functions and reunions. Her friends, family, and acquaintances will remember her eagerness to help those in need, her unfailing optimism, her gift-giving, and the sunny disposition she held in all she did.
She is survived by her husband, Dennis “Butch” Payton; her brother, Harold Nassif; her brother-in-law, Jim Payton; her cousin, Karen Peters; her nephews, Michael Nassif (Jenna) and Ryan Nassif (Robin); her niece, Emily Nassif; her great-nieces Jordan and Madeline Nassif; and her close friends who were also family to her, Virginia Williams and her daughters, Hazel and Skylar, June Bevers, Richard Hemlick, Misty Warner and April Keeling.
Susan’s family would also like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at CHI-St. Joseph’s Hospital (in both Bryan and Madisonville), and at Bristol Hospice, as well as the Rev. Mark Kusmirek of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, for their care, comfort and support during her final days.
A memorial service for Susan will be held on Saturday, March 24, at 11:00 a.m. at Living Truth Church, 1100 N. May St. All are invited.
