Tennis prepares for district finale

The Madisonville tennis team split a pair of matches last week with a district loss to Robinson Thursday and a victory over Stafford Friday, which was postponed earlier in the season.

The team dropped the match against Robinson at MHS by a score of 14-5.

“What the score does not show is that we went into seven tie-breakers during the match,” said Madisonville head tennis coach Catherine Sedlacek. “The kids fought hard but, in the end, losing those tie-breakers cost us the match.”

The Mustangs saw victories in mixed doubles from Mason Railsback and Elizabeth Guevara as well singles wins from Guevara, Caymen Forrest, Steven Payan and Eli Risinger.

Madisonville has one remaining district matchup against Mexia Thursday at MHS and they must win in order to qualify for the district tournament and postseason.

The Mustangs cruised to victory in Friday’s makeup match against Stafford by a total score of 19-0.

In men’s doubles, Madisonville saw victories from Forrest and Cesar Rosas, Lazaro Almaraz and Peyton Rose along with Risinger and Nathan Fleck. On the women’s side, doubles duos Serena Powers and Kylie Ouellette, Jicel Torres and Liz Arjon and Yesenia Aceves and Galilea Camarena were also victorious.

Railsback and Guevara logged a win in mixed doubles while Forrest, Railsback, Rosas, Almaraz, Risinger and Payan picked up wins in men’s singles. Women’s singles winners included Guevara, Powers, Torres, Arjon, Zoie Stewart and Caitlin Manning.

The Mustangs will host the critical district matchup against Mexia Thursday before battling The Woodlands Friday.
