Tennis prepares for postseason play

The Mustang tennis team has finished their regular season for fall second in their conference with a win over Mexia on Thursday.

Madisonville played all three of their district opponents twice and will begin postseason play next week.

“This year’s team is the most balanced in terms of depth and talent for both boys and girls that we’ve had yet,” said Madisonville head tennis coach Catherine Sedlacek. “This is such a driven and dedicated squad that I have enjoyed coaching immensely.”

The Mustangs were able to win 4 of their 6 district matchups this season. They took down Athens and Mexia twice, including a road victory at Mexia last Thursday to conclude the regular season.

Both district losses for the Mustangs came at the hand of Palestine, who won the district regular season title. The first loss came on the road on Sept. 7, where Madisonville fell 11-8. Multiple matches in the contest, however, were decided by tiebreakers.

The Mustangs also battled the district champs at home on Sept. 28. They were battling some injuries entering this one and fell 14-5.

Despite two losses to Palestine, Madisonville showcased an impressive fall regular season against their district and otherwise. The Bi-District postseason round was originally scheduled for Oct. 9-18, but the Mustangs will not compete in the playoffs until Oct. 16 or 17.
