For the second straight year, the tennis doubles duo of Kennedy Bryant and Harper Wiseman drew a state qualifier in the first round of the Regional Tournament at Bryan High School earlier this month.
Harper and Wiseman battled poor weather throughout their performance in Bryan and matched up against Robinson in their first showing. Robinson would go on to take the Regional Championship when it was all said and done.
“I was very proud of how hard (Harper and Wiseman) played them,” said Madisonville tennis coach Catherine Sedlacek. “They fell 6-4 and 6-1 whereas every other team Robinson played until the championship lost 6-0 and 6-1.”
Last season, Harper and Wiseman fell in the Regionals to Lampasas, who also went on to qualify for State.
The loss puts an end to the Madisonville tennis season and the Mustangs will be off until the fall season gets underway. But the uniqueness of a year-round sport like tennis means that the players will stay active during the summer in preparation for next school year.
Sedlacek has always praised her players at every level for their willingness to stay involved during the offseason and improve their tennis games. In Nov., she was named the Texas Tennis Coaches Association’s Region 3 AAAA Coach of the Year for the 2018 fall season.
A number of other program members, included Harper and Wiseman, were also distinguished with awards for their efforts this season.
