Multiple members of the Mustang track team impressed during the Area meets last week to earn a spot at Regionals this weekend in Huntsville.
“All of our athletes deserve congratulating for their outstanding performances throughout the season as well as the District and Area meets,” said Madisonville head track coach Russell Urbantke.
The following team members will continue their seasons at the Regional meet.
From the men’s side, Uriel Willis, Aaron Nellums, Cornelius Merchant and Johnny Simpson will compete in the 4x100-meter relays. Gage Smith, Donovan Young, Merchant and Simpson will appear in the 4x200-meter relays and Simpson will also compete in the 200-meter. Chris Scott also qualified for shot put, Efren Garza for pole vault and Aaron Nellums for triple jump.
The women competitors will be Mimi Holiday, Kenndie Moffett, Monique Berry and Garlanesha Gilbert for the 4x100-meter relay. Berry, Moffett and Gilbert will also compete in the 4x200-meter relay along with Raegan Olivera. Moffett will compete in the triple jump as well.
Madisonville’s Garlanesha Gilbert, who was the first place champion for the 200-meter dash at Areas, will compete in the event again at Regionals. Madi Caperton earned the same distinction in the 800 and 1600-meter races and will participate in both in Huntsville.
As a team, the Mustang men finished seventh overall out of 12 during the Area meet while the women finished tied for fourth place. The Regional action will take place on Friday and Saturday throughout both days at Sam Houston State University.
