Multiple Madisonville track players competed in regionals at Sam Houston State over the weekend and several qualified for the state meet.
The Mustang state qualifiers included Women’s 4x100 relay team members Mimi Holiday, Kenndie Moffett, Monique Berry and Garlanesha Gilbert. The ladies won the event with a season best time of 48.70.
Johnny Simpson also qualified for state for the second straight season by placing second in the 200-meter dash with a personal best time of 21.78. Last season, he went to Austin for the same event.
Representing Madisonville was both the 4x100 and 4x200 men’s and women’s relay teams. The women’s relay team dropped the baton in the 4x200 race after they qualified for state in the 100s. The 200s team consisted of Berry, Moffett, Gilbert and Raegan Olivera.
The men’s 4x200 team earned a personal best time of 1:29.89 and finished fourth in a very tight race. The team consisted of Gage Smith, Aaron Nellums, Cornelius Merchant and Johnny Simpson. Nellums, Merchant and Simpson were also part of the 4x100 team along with Uriel Willis that posted a personal best time of 42.90.
Many individual Mustangs impressed at the regional meet in their own right. Gilbert ran six events in two days and was just an inch short of qualifying for state in long jump on Friday morning. She also placed third in the 200-meter dash.
Moffett, who qualified for three regional events as just as freshman, competed in the triple jump as well as both relay teams. She will experience the state meet for the first time with the 4x100 relay team.
Nellums competed in the triple jump on Friday and placed third with a personal best of 44’ 8.25.
Also representing Madisonville at the regional events in Huntsville were Chris Scott, Efron Garza and Maddie Caperton. Those who qualified for the state meet will compete in Austin on May 11 and 12.
