Vera Standley


Funeral services for Vera Spillars Standley, 93, of Lake Limestone and formerly of Madisonville, were held Sunday, March 25, 2018 at the First Baptist Church in Madisonville. Rev. Kenneth Worley officiated the service, and interment followed in the Madisonville Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Don Renfrow, Ryan Renfrow, Britt Berrier, Ty Theiss, Brandon Standley, Deontae McAdams, Bryan Theiss and David Berrier.

Honorary pallbearers were Bill McVey, Bill Standley, Mike Hand, Larry Renfrow and Ray Brown.

Vera Spillars Standley was born June 30, 1924, in Normangee. She was a twin and one of seven children born to J.D. Sr. and Sudie (Stewart) Spillars. She married her husband, James, on April 16, 1942, and they were married for 53 years until his passing. Vera was the co-owner and operator of the Corral Restaurant in Madisonville for more than 50 years. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and especially fishing. Vera spent a lot of her time fishing and always loved every minute of it. She was a former longtime member of First Baptist Church in Madisonville and was a current member of the Lake Limestone Baptist Church. Vera had lived most of her life in Madisonville before moving to Lake Limestone in 2008. She passed away March 23, 2018, at her home in Lake Limestone.

Vera was preceded in death by both of her parents; husband, James Standley; infant son, James Ray Standley; granddaughter, Traci Theiss; brothers, J.D. Jr. and Norman “Sonny” Spillars; and sisters, Cora Hand and Velma Jaap. Surviving family members include daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Tommy Andrews of Lake Limestone; brother, Melvin “Mutt” Spillars of Kemah; twin sister, Era Berrier of Pasadena and sister, Betty Gilbert of Madisonville; grandsons, Cary Andrews and James Kevin “Dink” Andrews and wife, Jennifer; great-grandchildren, Hailey Theiss, Ty Theiss, Logan Andrews and Hannah Andrews; and step-great-grandchildren, Hailey Metcalf and Cole Garrett.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lake Limestone Baptist Church, 17905 Sterling Robertson Dam Road, Thornton, TX 76687 and Texas Home Health Hospice, Attention: Patient Foundation Fund, 8300 Central Park Drive Suite A, Waco, TX 76712.
