Webb still making her mark in rodeo

Tacy Webb is returning to the College National Finals Rodeo.

The Madisonville High School graduate is a part of the Sam Houston State University women's team that qualified for the June nationals in Casper, Wyo. The women finished the season first in the Southern Region standings.

Last year the women won the national title. Webb competed for the squad in goat tying after winning the region title in that event during the regular season. She scored 10 points at the nationals.

"We had a blast," said the sophomore, who received a saddle for her region title. "We're hoping to bring home another national title."

Webb finished this season ranked sixth in goat tying and 10th in breakaway roping in the region. "I was kind of disappointed," she said. "My fall semester was very good."

She won the goat tying at the Southwest Texas Junior College event in October and tied for third in the next rodeo.

But she started nursing school during the spring semester, when her best finish in goat tying was a third in March. She was second in breakaway roping at a March rodeo and fourth in it at a February event.

"I don't get to practice as much," said Webb, who rides a couple of times a week. "I always have to study."

She is happy to be a part of such a competitive program. "We have a lot of girls trying to come to Sam Houston now because we're so strong," she said.

Stephen F. Austin State junior Tanner Parks finished ninth in the decathlon at the Southland Conference championship. The Normangee resident missed contributing to the team scoring by one place. His best finishes were third in the pole vault and fifth in the 100-meter dash.
