The Madisonville women’s basketball team opened their 2020 schedule with a 55-42 victory over Jasper at MHS Friday. The Lady Mustangs also competed in a preseason scrimmage in Brenham Nov. 3 and will travel to Brookshire Royal Friday.

“Jasper is a lot like Madisonville: super athletic kids who expect to win, they want to press and be fast-paced,” said head coach Monique Whittaker. “We were able to get them out of that. We made them drop down to a half court press, and eventually made them get into a 2-3 (zone), and I’m very pleased with that.”

The team includes two senior leaders in Daiona Johnson and Tra’Shayla Smith along with returning varsity presence and sophomore Jerkayla Dickey, but much of the roster is comprised of young players looking to prove themselves at a new level.

“That we were able to (slow Jasper’s press), especially with such a young team, is a very good sign moving forward,” said Whittaker, who is in her first year at the MHS helm. “We still have 30 games left. As of right now, we just need to work on court awareness and getting up and down the court. I think sometimes they want to take some time off and get a breather, and I let them know that there are no breaks (while on the court).”

Freshman Ke’Myreul Wheaton led the Lady Mustangs with 16 points in her first varsity action, including eight in the first quarter alone. Dickey recorded six points in the third quarter to help Madisonville outscore Jasper 15-9 and separate themselves in the second half.

“(Wheaton) stepped up in a big way,” said Whittaker. “There is a lot of potential all around. They work well together as a team and, if they continue to do that, great things will happen for us.”

The Lady Mustangs will compete in a district with Mexia, La Vega, Robinson, China Spring and Connally in 2020. They are scheduled to play in 16 games in the pre-district season, which will not include tournaments as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“During the time we would have had Christmas tournaments, we will play in three games in a row,” said Whittaker. “I tried to assimilate normalcy. I think the kids appreciate having games instead of practice.”

The Lady Mustangs will take on Brookshire Royal on the road Friday. The start time has been pushed back to 5 p.m. Their next home matchup comes Tuesday against Crockett at 6:15 p.m.
