Former Madisonville and current Sam Houston State football player Chris Scott was awarded a full scholarship by SHSU football last week. The defensive lineman has also applied for the masters program and graduates this spring. Scott will play next fall as a graduate student-athlete for the Bearcats. The Madisonville soccer team picked up a pair of victories over the week with a 3-1 district win against New Waverly and a 2-1 non-district win over Tyler. The Mustangs saw goals from Issac Hinojosa, Vladimir Morales and Juan Torres against New Waverly with assists from Cristian Vasquez and Gabriel Aceves. Madisonville’s Xzavier Whaley looks for a teammate midair during the team’s 63-39 victory over Robinson at MHS Monday. The win marked the team’s second straight to open district place after they defeated no. 9 Connally in a 62-60 thriller at MHS Friday. (See News for more) CAMPBELL ATKINS

Normangee Panthers basketball legend Joseph Jones was honored by the high school and had his number 30 jersey retired in the presence of family and friends Friday. Jones led the Panthers to a Class 1A State Championship in 2004 before joining the Texas A&M Aggies, where he earned All-Big 12 honors in each of his four seasons. He is the first Normangee player to have his number retired. NORMANGEE HIGH SCHOOL

The Madisonville women’s basketball team improved to 3-1 in district play with a pair of home victories this week. The Lady Mustangs knocked off Connally 46-30 Friday as well as Robinson Monday by a score of 49-24.

Upon joining the Sterling College (Kan.) football team, Armando Juarez changed positions. Recruited as a quarterback, the freshman out of Madisonville High School switched to wide receiver.

The Madisonville soccer team split a pair of district matchups over the week with a 2-2 (4-3) victory over Livingston in a penalty shootout and a 3-1 loss to Hudson. The Livingston matchup was knotted up at 2-2 before being decided by penalty kicks with both regulation goals scored by Juan Torres. Penalty shootout goals were scored by Torres, Christian Vazquez, Issac Hinojosa and Pablo Sanchez while Alex Torres recorded one blocked shot.
