Young transfers to Tyler

Daniel Young will play baseball for a different college this year.

The Madisonville High School graduate said he has transferred from Abilene Christian University to Tyler Junior College.

He entered the transfer portal after the spring season, when the 6-foot-1 freshman outfielder did not play.

Tyler was among the junior colleges to show interest in Young, and it was the only campus he visited. He displayed his skills, including batting practice, during a campus visit the second week of August.

The sophomore said he will play all three outfield positions and first base for Tyler. He prepared for this year by playing for the Lynx of the Five Tool Premier Collegiate League during the summer. Former Mustang teammates Matt Rudis and Jake Risinger also played for other teams in the league.

"Originally I was supposed to go to California to play," said Young, noting that the pandemic disrupted those plans. "It was fun to see those guys."

He hit .148 in 13 games with one home run and three runs batted in, according to the league's online site. He said he hit "anywhere I could fit in" because Lynx had a "stacked lineup."

More baseball

Right-handed pitcher Rudis has transferred to Sam Houston State University after two years at Texas Christian University. He is a sophomore.

Risinger hit .208 in 14 games for the Brazos Valley Renegades in the Five Tool Premier league. The Southwestern Christian University catcher drove in two runs.

Men's golf

Previously at Normangee High, Logan Young missed the cut at the Texas State Open. The University of Houston graduate student shot 149 (72-77).
